AKSHARA Foundation

Balwadi centres in Bangalore:
No. of centres: 118
Coverage: 3000 children

Preschools (balwadis) have been set up in communities and are managed by local volunteers. They provide an atmosphere of joyful learning for 4 to 6 year olds and socialize the role of education in communities. A Balwadi is a child’s preparatory stepping stone to school. Development skills are inculcated in a Balwadi. Physical development, language enhancement, cognitive development, social development and emotional development. There is a small component of reading and writing through simple readers in Kannada and Urdu, with large pictures, which teaches children the fundamentals of language. At a Balwadi, they also go through a socialization process, in a completely different environment. Children are assessed through the year to monitor learning and change. All children, after completing 5 years are enrolled in formal schools. Akshara Foundation has set up hundreds of Balwadi in many communities across the State. Akshara has trained young women to become “edupreneurs” and have helped them to start their own preschools by providing training and teaching learning material.

Community libraries in Bangalore:
No. of centres: 10
Coverage: 4000 children

Akshara Foundation has a network of libraries in schools and communities to encourage and sustain a reading habit among children. The libraries open up children’s minds to worlds beyond their own and are a key factor in facilitating the learning process. The libraries are an integral part of Akshara Foundation’s commitment to children and reading. They anchor the learning children obtain from Akshara’s ongoing reading programme and give them an opportunity to continue to access those language skills and build on them, so that what is once learnt stays embedded, and does not fade with disuse.

Libraries are not only about books. They are hubs of learning. An Akshara-appointed librarian is always available on site for children. All the librarians have recently been trained to conduct language-based exercises and puzzles to expand children’s vocabulary. Hippocampus, one of Akshara’s partners, conducts a reading based activity programme called Word Wings in Kannada and English. Libraries also expose children to resource people who train them in elementary physics and geo physics, hold general knowledge classes through plays and stories and conduct theatre-based learning activities.

The libraries have a vibrant and enthusiastic member base. Every library has an average of one thousand books, covering a broad spectrum of topics to address both younger and older children.
